Neltume presents a US$900 million container terminal project in Montevideo

Neltume Ports presented the Uruguayan government with a private initiative to develop a new terminal specializing in containers at the Port of Montevideo. The project, called the Montevideo Container Terminal (MCT), has an estimated investment of US$900 million.

The facility was designed to handle up to 1.15 million TEU per year. The plan includes approximately 940 meters of quay, with capacity to serve two post-panamax ships simultaneously, as well as a berth dedicated to transshipment of cargo between ships and barges.

The terminal would occupy approximately 38 hectares and have independent landside access. According to the company, the construction phase could generate approximately 1,800 jobs.

The proposal was formally submitted to the Uruguayan Presidency for evaluation. So far, no concession model, construction schedule, or expected start date for operations has been disclosed.

If it moves forward, the project will add a specialized facility to the Montevideo port complex, which already includes the Terminal Cuenca del Plata and Montecon's operations at the public docks. Neltume Ports is Montecon's majority shareholder.
