New pulp terminal strengthens inland-waterway logistics in Rio Grande
Signing the land-assignment agreement allows progress on a private terminal at the Port of Rio Grande, designed to integrate barges, ships, and Rio Grande do Sul's pulp production.
The development of a new private terminal at the Port of Rio Grande advanced with the signing of the land-assignment agreement for the project. The agreement was signed on September 11 by the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services and Terminal Rio Grande do Sul S.A.
The initiative had already obtained authorization in January to operate the port facility through an adhesion agreement signed by the Ministry of Ports and Airports and the National Waterway Transport Agency.
The project provides for two berths for ships and two others for barges, as well as a warehouse with static capacity for 194,000 tonnes of pulp. The facility was designed to handle approximately 5 million tonnes of the product per year.
The operation will be part of CMPC's Nature Project, which includes a new pulp production unit in Barra do Ribeiro and structures for transporting the cargo. The logistics plan provides for receiving the production by inland waterway, storing it at the terminal, and loading it onto ships at the Port of Rio Grande.
With this configuration, the project is expected to expand the connection between inland navigation and maritime transport, integrating Rio Grande do Sul's industrial production into the regional waterway network. The Ministry of Ports and Airports also reports that it is working to restore the navigability of the state's waterways and improve safety and regularity conditions for cargo transport.
